Layer Cake NYC (2024)

“Layer Cake NYC” is a vibrant and intricate representation of New York City, with a slice cut out to reveal the hidden stories and structures beneath the surface. At the top, iconic buildings—the Woolworth Building, Empire State Building, and Chrysler Building—symbolize the city’s architectural grandeur. On the “street level,” tourists and residents are represented by small chocolate chips, a nod to the sweet and savory bustling and diverse population of New York.

Beneath the surface, each layer unveils a unique aspect of city life. In one layer, there’s an homage to classic New York pizza, a staple of the city’s culture. Below, a subway scene captures the me hustling my work underground, signing and selling prints. A snake slithers close by, a foreshadowing of the challenges with deceptive investors and tricky business encounters an artist may encounter. And this is based on my personal experiences. 

The art also playfully includes New York’s infamous residents—alligators, rats, and a ninja turtle—adding a whimsical yet gritty touch to the layers. References to the East and Hudson rivers lie at the bottom, while sewer tunnels, subterranean railroads, and an abundance of wires and pipes depict the endless complexity and engineering marvel that lies beneath the city. Hidden couches suggest secret bunkers or party spaces, where politicians and businessmen might gather. Add a small city of bodies in concrete and it still doesn’t begin to capture the dark but real underworld. Facetious yet based in reality, watch out for dark energy. Stay guarded and stoic! 

“Layer Cake NYC” captures the marvel, chaos, and resilience of New York, reflecting both the charm and grit of a city like no other. Through vibrant imagery and clever symbols, this piece celebrates the layers of life, labor, and legends that make New York truly iconic.
