20,000 Leagues Under New York City  (2018)

In the late 1800s, Jules Verne was inspired by a conceptual submarine model at The World's Fair in Paris, France. This inspired the creation of his novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. In the story, the U.S. government assembles an expedition in New York City to hunt a mysterious sea monster using the electric Nautilus L train submarine. The narrative reaches a climax when the Nautilus encounters a school of giant squid in the Atlantic Ocean, a scene that has become iconic in literature and film.

Nearly a century later, both Verne’s novel and a Disney adaptation left a lasting impact on pop culture, inspiring countless artistic interpretations. One such interpretation emerged when I moved to New York City and spent time selling his work in subway stations. On a stormy night aboard the L train from Manhattan to Brooklyn, as the subway car rocked violently beneath the East River, I was struck by the idea of merging Verne’s classic tale with the modern New York City subway system. Imagining a submerged subway network powered by an innovative submarine system, O'Rourke envisioned the L train-submarine battling a giant squid as it emerged into the East River. This creative fusion of past and present, born from a moment of inspiration, allowed me to bring a unique artistic concept to life. Again, only New York could’ve inspired this.

- If the patch is on the back, it'll be placed in the center of the upper back between the shoulders. On the front of the crewneck, a branded PJ O'Rourke signature patch is placed on the left breast.
