I was on a real stride at this point, selling what I still consider some of the best street art in NYC. Fully renegade. Fully independent. No safety net. Just showing up day after day & making it work.
It wasn’t easy. “Just setting up” always came with obstacles. Space issues. Authority issues. Characters you never knew how to read. Situations that could flip from calm to tense without warning. But I learned how to maneuver with the hand I was dealt, navigating vast swaths of unpredictable energy & slightly stressful scenarios.
I say slightly because I’ve always made it a point to roll with the punches. Stress & obstacles were part of the environment, not something to fear. The subway trained that muscle fast.
Around this time, making blankets became a creative way to move the work. They were fun, functional, different, & they gave people something unexpected to connect with. Art you could live with, not just hang.
